The day
If the morning is clear, ride the funicular up to Santa Luzia first. The basilica went up between 1904 and 1959, and the climb to the top of its dome opens onto a view down the Lima estuary and the Atlantic coast that National Geographic once ranked among the world’s finest — the locals will tell you before the ticket seller does. The white hospital ship spent decades keeping cod fishermen alive on the Grand Banks, and the walk through its wards and operating theatre is one of Portugal’s stranger and better small museums. The riverfront and the beach across the footbridge fill whatever is left.
When to go
May through September for the coast light and the best odds on the dome view. The Romaria d’Agonia, in the second half of August, is the city at maximum voltage — the gold, the costumes, the drumming gigantones — and at maximum crowding; it is either the best day of the year to come or the worst, depending on what you want. Winter is quiet, rainy, and still worth it for the ship and the filigree if the trains suit.
